Silâns 1964 - 1965
Barry Flanagan
This is a facsimile publication of Barry Flanagans student magazine Silans produced at St Martins School of Art. The publication comes at a time of renewed interest in the connectivity between visual practices and language, the development of concrete poetry and artist led magazines. When Flanagan enrolled in the Advanced Sculpture course at St Martins School of Art in 1964 he joined a department with a strong interest in experimentation and enquiry. He co edited the magazine with colleagues Alistair Jackson and Rudy Leenders, negotiating with administration staff to use the office cyclostyle to produce the publication.
Silâns, printed on alternate Mondays in term time, provided an important vehicle to circulate concrete poetry. Other contributors included Philip King; John Latham; John Sharkey; David Bainbridge; Henri Chopin; Stefan Themerson; Shirley Cameron; Wendy Taylor; Bruce Lacey; Stanley Brobyn; George Vantongerloo; Jean Arp and Nick Wayte.
