Possible Worlds: Sculpture from Europe
Serpentine Gallery
Possible Worlds: Sculpture from Europe is a landmark 1990 exhibition catalogue published by the Serpentine Gallery and the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London. It documents the first major collaboration between the two institutions, showcasing emerging, continent-spanning artists relatively unknown in Britain at the time. The exhibition, which ran from 9 November 1990 to 6 January 1991, featured seven prominent sculptors (Miroslaw Balka; Stepham Balkenhol; Jean-Marc Bustamante; Asta Gröting; Juan Muñoz; Thomas Schütte; Franz West) from Eastern and Western Europe who worked primarily with unconventional installations. The book captures this cross-border survey, which aimed to highlight modern European art developments outside of Britain's domestic focus.
