Inscriptions and Inventions: British Photography in the 1980s
The British Council

This first edition is a survey catalogue of British photography in 1980s. It includes an essay by Ian Jeffrey and photographs by Keith Arnatt, Laurence Cutting, Paul Graham, Ron O'Donnell, Martin Parr, Peter Fraser, Jem Southam, Boyd Webb, Richard Wentworth, and Verdi Yahooda.

“This exhibition selected by the distinguished writer on photography and cultural historian Ian Jeffrey and Brett Rogers explores certain recent developments in British photography which have been influential in creating a new more vital identity for the medium both here and abroad. Whilst the selected photographers come from disparate backgrounds and cannot be seen as forming a coherent group or movement they do share many concerns. They all for example demonstrate a keen interest in subject matter whether it takes the form of scrutinizing everyday objects (Peter Fraser Verdi Yahooda Richard Wentworth); re-examining aspects of the vernacular landscape (Martin Parr Jem Southam) or extending the medium across boundaries and creating fictional environments (Boyd Webb and Ron O’Donnell).” - Henry Meyric Hughes, Foreword.
