Sea the Stars
Alison Turnbull

Sea the Stars serves as a document of Alison Turnbull's exploration of observational systems and their translation into abstract visual forms. Turnbull's practice is characterised by the transformation of readymade information, such as plans, diagrams, blueprints, and charts, into abstract paintings.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Alison Turnbull’ at Talbot Rice Gallery, University of Edinburgh. The exhibition presented a series of paintings and drawings that reconfigured star charts and astronomical imagery, including a composite image of distant galaxies assembled from Hubble Space Telescope photographs. This body of work reflects Turnbull's interest in the margins and transitional spaces of human observation and the ways in which scientific data can be reimagined through painting.

Includes an essay by art historian Ed Krčma, and a conversation between the artist and Pat Fisher.
